With the majority of us leading busy lives these days, a dishwasher is now becoming commonplace in the kitchen. Not only does a dishwasher save you time, it also has your pots and pans sparkling like a hand wash couldn’t. Water temperature in a dishwasher can reach up to 170 F, which we don’t advise manually washing with! The high temperature helps wash away any dirt and grease better than any hand wash could.

Choosing The Dishwasher For You

There are many factors in deciding on a dishwasher. Below are many of the areas you need to think about:

Firstly, is the space where the dishwasher will be kept. Check out the extra space your kitchen holds and measure it. Generally, the width of a dishwasher ranges from 18 to 24 inches, so check out how much space your kitchen can provide for the same. A very big dishwasher will not only cost you much, but also will stick out of your kitchen (if small) like a sore thumb.

There are basically two kinds of dishwasher – portable and in-built. The in-built one is more popular; as it directly fits in to your kitchen, saves space and has more loading capacity. You can consider a portable dishwasher if you have less space in your kitchen. It can be kept away when not in use.

You need to think about the capacity of the dishwasher too. If you have a very small family, you may be happy with a small capacity dishwasher. A dishwasher with the capacity of holding 21 place settings is ideal for a family with 4-5 members. If you have more members, consider going for super capacity dishwasher. Dishwasher with adjacent tines and trays are better options, as they can hold more dishes. Still, you need to check whether they can hold different shaped dishes and are flexible enough to maximize the space for your dishes.

Now you need to check the spray levels and their numbers. The more the number, the cleaner your dishes will be. Check whether any of the spray gets blocked when you put dishes inside.

You would like to go for heavy-duty disposal, if you don’t want to rinse the plates before washing. Also, check whether the dishwasher is automatic or you need to stay there to press the button every time. In addition, a dishwasher can be very noisy, so consider going for a sound dampening one.

The water consumption should not be much and the temperature, which it should raise to, should be at least 140 degree F. The hotter the water, the cleaner your dishes will be, so choose accordingly.

Check for the energy consumption, with the help of the label for energy efficiency ratings. You can also ask the salesperson about how the amount of energy the dishwasher will consume.

The dishwasher should be easy to handle and clean. Go for simple designs and if you are not a great fan of technology, for fewer buttons as well.
A dishwasher with dirt sensors is costly and hardly better than those without. In addition, some dishwashers come with self-cleaning filters and delay start timer. Depending on your choice and preference, choose from these extra features.

A dishwasher with stainless steel insides is a good option, as it doesn’t rust. However, it surely costs more than a normal one. If your budget is low, you can go for the ones that have their insides made of plastic.
You have the option to choose between natural-drying and heat-drying dishwasher. The heat-drying one consumes a lot of energy and is certainly not a good option if you want to save electricity.
