Stainless Steel Kitchens

Many people are currently adding a modern feel to their homes and nothing says this more than with a stainless steel kitchen. Up until recently, stainless steel in a kitchen was generally used commercially because of its perfectly flat surface and is easy to keep clean. Now people are taking stainless steel into their home, usually to combine with other materials such as wood cabinet doors.

Although stainless steel kitchen surfaces tend to scratch easily, this worn, restaurant kitchen look attracts many people. Of course, like any other surface, you need to use chopping boards when preparing food to prevent the steel from scratching up. The beauty of stainless steel, as the name hints at, it is very easy to keep clean. A few tips on keeping the kitchen looking sparkling new are:

To keep your stainless steel hob or cooker clean, first go over it with your normal cleaning product, then go over it with some baby oil and cotton wool. You will be amazed at how this gets rid of any smears.

To keep your stainless steel sink in immaculate condition, put some bicarbonate soda around the sink and your taps. With a scourer, lightly rub around the whole surface area and then with a damp cloth and warm water, go over the surface to reveal a completely clean look. Then, to get an extra shiny look, pour some table salt into the sink, gently rub around the surface then rinse away with boiling water and you will notice a really improvement.

Kitchen Designs

In terms of kitchen design, you will obviously have to work with the current shape of the room. Although you will be able to move parts of the kitchen around it is always good to work with what is known as the triangle theory. Basically the space between the cooker, fridge and sink should be kept to a minimum and then build work surfaces between them for food preparation and area to put all your pots and pans. Unless you have a clear idea in your head of how you want your new kitchen to be, it is advisable to ask a kitchen designer to give you a few ideas to help you think outside the box. They can generally give some great space saving ideas an you will be surprised how much a small change can make.

Another thing to think about is the current positioning of the plumbing and electrical sockets. Be very careful here as these can be expensive to move around and are certainly not small DIY jobs! Tackling this problem early on encourages you to think about the positioning of the kitchen parts and in a way, may narrow your options unless you have a vast budget and don’t mind paying for the above services to be carried out.

While we are on the subject of budget, let’s talk about the quality of kitchen. Obviously the amount you have to spend on your kitchen will determine what you buy, but the below points will give you some tips on what to look out for.

-   Look at shells that have 18mm carcass timber rather than 15mm

-   Units that have adjustable legs are much easier to fit as you will find most floors are uneven

-   Do test the hinges and runners before you purchase. You will be surprised by the poor quality of some of those on offer

-   Don’t buy cheap door handles! These can make a remarkable difference to the look at only a fraction of the relative cost of the whole kitchen!

If you are purchasing a new kitchen floor as well, note the best time to lay it is straight after the old kitchen has been taken away and the plumbing and electrical work has been done. You want to get the floor completely tiled or laid before the new kitchen is installed as the extra cost of any tiles under the new kitchen units is negligible in comparison to how long it takes to cut around them.

How about Kitchen Ventilation?

Kitchen ventilation is vitally important. Unfortunately, we sometimes hear of gas explosions in kitchens. These are caused more often than not by people not turning their cookers off after use. Kitchen ventilation helps disperse the gas and lower the chances of risk. Also any fumes, especially from frying food, are oily in nature so the stick to everything from the walls to all your cooking equipment. This is not easy to remove so usually requires an expert to come in at cost. Ventilating your kitchen properly with an exhaust fan or hood pays for itself.

Fitted Kitchens

So, you think you’re ready to purchase your new dream fitted kitchen, but still have a little nagging feeling that you haven’t made the right decision. Well let us help you with a few tips and tricks to make sure you pick the perfect fitted kitchen.

Firstly, if you invite a kitchen sales rep into your home, remember it is YOUR home. We have heard so many stories where people feel bullied into purchasing a fitted kitchen by sales people that are intent on making commission. Tell them you will think about the offer overnight and do not make a snap judgement there and then. Also, make sure you don’t take the first offer you get – hunt around and use your previous quotes as a bargaining tool. The fitted kitchen marketplace is highly competitive, so you are in the driving seat.

Now, don’t get suckered into purchasing your fitted kitchen just on price. We understand here at Kitchen Heaven that everyone has a budget, especially in these troubled times, but there is a reason someone is selling the “Best cheapest kitchen deal ever!”. Remember, this is a purchase you will not be making too many times in your life and you will be spending an awful lot of your time in your new fitted kitchen, so don’t buy something just because it is a few hundred cheaper. Cheap normally means below standard material, non-integrated appliances and a general all round poor finish, probably leaving you wanting to replace your new fitted kitchen far quicker than if you were happy with the end result. This is what they call a false economy!.

There are a few things you can look out for aesthetically that are tell tale signs of cheap fitted kitchen. Make sure the doors match the carcasses – having a white carcass against a wooden coloured door looks cheap and there is no reason in this day and age why you should settle for that. Most reputable fitted kitchen suppliers will have all coloured units. Ask the supplier what the backs of the carcasses are made out of. If it is 6mm particle board, avoid it like the plague. It should be at least 12mm. Again, going back to the colour, if the back of the carcass is white and a different colour to the rest of your units, it generally means it will be of poor quality. Find units with anti-slam devices – again, many do these days, so don’t think of it is a luxury cost you shouldn’t incur. Whether you are putting your fitted kitchen in yourself or are employing a professional to do it, buying built-up carcasses rather than flat-packed will save you time and inturn, money.

Buying integrated appliances for your new fitted kitchen will certainly cost you more than free-standing, but this is where we at Kitchen Heaven believe the extra money is well spent. Your whole kitchen will feel as one, rather than a few seperate applainaces, so for spending that bit extra, you will feel far more proud to show friends and family your new purchase. Lastly, even if you are fitting the kitchen yourself, take some advice from a professional fitter. Most reputable suppliers will have an installation help line, so use it!
